Zen Tunnel Engineering was founded in 2023 by a Japanese tunnelling veteran and two Bangladeshi TBM specialists — colleagues across a dozen underground projects, now partners in one company.
Kakita-san's career began on Japan's public works — service tunnels, sewer pipelines and water-supply tunnels — where he absorbed the meticulous planning and construction culture that defines Japanese engineering. Those early drives in Hiroshima, Niigata and Yamaguchi taught the fundamentals that no classroom can: ground behaviour, machine rhythm, and the discipline of doing small things perfectly, every ring.
Jasim Uddin has spent over 25 years keeping tunnel boring machines alive — assembling them in launch shafts, running them at the face, and fixing them when the ground fights back. He began as a mechanic and welder on Samsung, Taisei and Sembawang tunnel contracts, mastering TBM assembly, dismantling and troubleshooting from the workshop floor up.
Zahirul Islam's twenty-four years underground cover the full breadth of Singapore's tunnel programme. Most recently he has driven CREG earth-pressure-balance machines on the Cross Island Line's CR111 contract and Herrenknecht EPBs on the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System's T08 — both under KSL Tunnelling. His first deep-sewer drives came far earlier, on DTSS T04 with a Mitsubishi machine under Samsung Corporation.
